A New Toolbox for Community-Shaped Tourism, September 23, 2026

Time: Wednesday, September 23, 2026 at 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Registration ends Wednesday, September 23, 2026 at 10:00 AM

How can we move beyond simply involving local communities and enable them to shape tourism development in practice?

Join us for a two-hour online session exploring new and practical ways of engaging residents meaningfully in tourism. The session is part of the EUI Innovative Actions project, CULTIGEN and brings together perspectives and experiences from destinations across Europe.

Rather than focusing on theory alone, the session will highlight hands-on approaches, reflections, and lessons learned from working directly with communities.

What we will explore

The session will be structured around two overall themes:

Beyond Surveys

How can we capture richer local insights, stories, and perspectives?

  • Exploring creative and alternative methods for generating deeper insights
  • Reflecting on the opportunities and limitations of digital tools

Beyond Consultation

How can we create meaningful local participation in tourism?

  • Turning engagement into real impact
  • Creating long-term commitment and strong local networks

Across both themes, you will hear short presentations and examples from CULTIGEN partners as well as other European cities.

Both themes will be rounded off with panel discussions, offering you the opportunity to ask questions and exchange perspectives.

Who should attend?

This session is for anyone with an interest in developing tourism together with local communities. We particularly welcome:

  • Municipalities and regional authorities
  • Destination Management Organisations (DMOs)
  • Tourism professionals
  • Researchers and consultants
  • Others working with, or interested in, sustainable and community-driven tourism

Who is behind the session?

The session is organised as part of the EUI project CULTIGEN and is co-funded by the European Union.

It is delivered in collaboration with project partners and invited cities from across Europe.
