The Italian Cultural Institute in Copenaghen presents White, an ongoing photographic project created by Stefano Amantini in the winter of 2009 when the Dolomites were granted the status of a UNESCO world heritage site.
White focuses on winter landscapes in the Dolomites -beautiful mountains in the Trentino Alto Adige region in Italy- where heavy snowfalls can convey a feeling of isolation. Paradoxically, the scenery also transmits a sense of strength as well as fragility.
As Paolo Paci explains in his introduction to the exhibition, “the sense of strength derives from the snow-capped peaks, from the snow-covered ridges, from the immense forests where man is simply a dot in a space and his presence disappears in the face of the majestic mountain landscape. But even small traces of modern civilization—a pole visible in the mist, a pylon that towers above the valley—demonstrate the overwhelming fragility of the landscape. The tourist industry, which has domesticated the mountain, has also added artificial elements: roads, ski resorts, lodges and noisy crowds.
Miniature fir trees covered with snow, small, bare larches. Tiny skiers, seemingly made of cardboard, against a white blanket. Little cableways silhouetted against a leaden sky. And seemingly gigantic walls of rock, dusted with white, come into sight through openings in the fog. These are the Dolomite's total white interpreted by Stefano Amantini. A dreamlike vision but at the same time a clear analysis of post-modern mountain scenery: an immaculate world that is also a playground for adults. A landscape that has been brutalized while at the same time remaining a gentle dream reminiscent of childhood.
