Conference

Time: Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at 3:00 PM - Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at 4:00 PM

RATIONALE

Due to the risk of poisoning of wildlife and humans, the use of lead for hunting ammunition is discussed and regulated in many European countries and elsewhere. So far, the main emphasis has been on gunshot, but during the last decade there has been an increasing focus on rifle ammunition.

Some countries have initiated the legal regulation of the use of lead rifle bullets, or introduced certain guidelines to the hunting community to reduce the risk that lead from rifle ammunition becomes a source of saturnism in wildlife and humans.

The transition from lead to non-lead ammunition raises a number of important questions including efficacy, safety, precision, availability, and health aspects.

Since 2012 the Danish Academy of Hunting has – financially supported by The 15. June Fund - performed a project to analyse the efficacy of non-lead rifle ammunition for hunting under normal Danish conditions.

Data collection has been running for three hunting seasons, and the project will conclude late winter 2015. One project component is the arrangement of an international conference with the aim to present and make project results available to discussion in a forum of experts, and to invite others to present results from similar research. The main emphasis will be on efficacy, but other relevant aspects will be covered.
